Young Person’s Clinic
The patch benefits from a Healthwise clinic in Newent. The service offers anyone under the age of 25 advice on sexually transmitted infections, free condoms, pregnancy testing and emergency hormonal contraception.
The service is free and can signpost young people onto other services if necessary. It is staffed by youth workers, a family planning doctor and nurse.
Diabetes Work in Staunton
Practice Nurse, Karen Edwards and District Nurse, Wendy King have put together an information booklet for people who have been diagnosed with Diabetes.
The booklet which includes information on foot care, diet, exercise and answers commonly asked questions has also been made available to existing Diabetes patients in the area.
Wendy and Karen who have both completed a three month university course on Diabetes are also supporting joint community nurse and practice nurse clinics for patients.
Weight Management Training
Practice nurses at the Newent surgery have undergone training from the Weight Management Team so they can offer advice and support to overweight patients. The Practice nurses, who offer a first point of contact for patients who want to lose weight, are equipped with resource packs containing useful leaflets and support materials. The Weight Management Team are committed to providing on-going training to healthcare staff in the Forest of Dean and provide a rolling programme of two courses a year.
District Nurses supporting Older People
Practice staff are joining forces in Newent to offer increased support to housebound patients in the local area.
The District Nurses are providing home based services to Older People which include blood pressure and mobility checks and advice on smoking cessation.
Many of the visits follow referrals from the Practice Nurses.
