The After Retirement and Health Awareness Group, Longlevens
Encouragement is given to exercise to music and a programme of well being lifestyle talks are also part of the sessions. The group has become a focus for the post retirement community in Longlevens with an average attendance of 40 people per session. Gill Hawkins, Practice Manager, Church Road Surgery said: “Initiated and led by the Health Visitor at our GP surgery this is a superb example of a community project involving the Health Visitor, District Nursing Team and all practice staff.”
The Baby Massage Group, London Road Surgery, Gloucester
The baby massage group in the North Gloucester Patch began early in 2004 with funding from the Community Budget Initiative. Sally Gould, Health Visitor said: “There are many benefits of baby massage for both parent and baby, including helping to develop and strengthen their relationships and helping to reduce postnatal depression.”
The Prime of Life Group at Kimbrose Day Centre
Organised by Sue Stick and Fran MacKay, Community Nurses for Older People, the Prime of Life Group for the over 65s is a focus for fun, friendship and fitness. A Physiotherapist or Assistant leads a session of gentle exercise followed by a talk on a health related topic e.g. Diabetes. Sue Stick said: “We believe there is strong evidence that such groups are needed within the community. The Prime of Life Group has gone from strength to strength and we are delighted with the progress that has been made over the year.”
Gold Standard Framework for Palliative Care
The 6 GP practices within the patch (Kingsholm, Barnwood, Heathville Road, Cheltenham Road, London Road and Longlevens) are working towards the Gold Standard Framework for Palliative Care. This is a practice based system to improve the organisation of cancer care and other life threatening conditions for patients in the last 6 – 12 months of life. Some of the benefits include better continuity of care and communication, improved symptom control and recognition of the needs of patients and their carers.
